An events dilemma: Gaby or Silverstein?

Written By: daveski on February 26, 2009 3 Comments

Perusing the FIT calendar and checking my own schedule I notice a rarity in the language-at-Berkeley universe: two great-looking events going on at the same time:

1. BLC Spring 2009 Lecture Series — Alice Gaby, Professor, Department of Linguistics, UC Berkeley
Talk title: “When is West? Talking and Thinking about Time and Space”
When: Fri, February 27, 3pm – 5pm
Where: 370 Dwinelle Hall

2. Linguistic Anthropology Working Group lecture by Michael Silverstein, U of Chicago
When: Fri, February 27, 4pm – 6pm
Where: 110 Wheeler (map)
Description: The title of the talk is: “The elementary forms of culture in a post-‘cultural’ world: Signification–circulation–emanation.” A lecture on how interdiscursivity of semiotic emblems lies at the heart of the establishment and institutionalization of semiotic value. Please RSVP to Xochitl Marsilli at xochitlmars AT berkeley.edu

So what to do? Is it going to be possible, knowing the BLC talk might end a little before 5, to high-tail it over from Dwinelle to Wheeler and catch both?

Found this interview/podcast from Gaby entitled “You Say Potato, I Say Cassava: Language, Culture and Perception”

    this is a dilemma, though.

Cool! We should have a virtual read-in tonight. Here’s the Silverstein paper that’s being passed around by the Linguistic Anthro Working Group: http://groups.google.com/group/fitatcal/web/Silverstein_2004.pdf

    I picked one.

    Thanks for the link, dave+ski.
