Applied Language Studies minor a reality at Berkeley!

Written By: daveski on March 11, 2009 2 Comments

Word is just in that a minor in Applied Language Studies is going to be a reality as of this fall!! This is a welcome victory in a long-fought battle, spearheaded by Professors Claire Kramsch (German, Education) and Rick Kern (French) in a time of shrinking budgets and ongoing struggles to define why in the world we at Berkeley, in California, in the U.S., should be interested in other languages anyway.

What is Applied Language Studies, you ask? This downloadable announcement says that

Sometimes called Applied Linguistics, the field of Applied Language Studies is devoted to the study of real-world problems in which language plays a major role, such as language learning and teaching, bilingual education, translation and interpretation, doctor-patient or lawyer-client relations. The proposed minor would help students use the languages they have studied by developing their critical awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, the complexities of communication both within and across cultures, foreign language education, plurilingualism, language and power, language and gender, translation and interpretation. It would address such issues as:

  • How languages are learned
  • How languages are used to achieve a wide range of social, cultural, aesthetic purposes
  • How language relates to culture, power and identity
  • How language and other symbolic systems construct both actual and virtual ‘reality’
  • The relationship of language and cognition
  • What it means to be bi- or multilingual

If you’re looking for a minor…sign right up! Information about procedures and who to contact with questions is on the announcement.

Some things are just so unfair… I guess I’ll have to come back for a second undergraduate degree and major in German and Korean and then I can minor in Applied Linguistics! That’s kind of overkill though, isn’t it?!
