Welcome! Willkommen! Tervetuloa! Merhaba! Barev hyer! Foon ying! Bruchot habaot! Isten hozot! Bienvenue! Dobro pozhalovat! Mabuhay! Hos geldiniz! Chào mung! Salam alaikum! Isibingelelo! Ukwemukela! Bienvenido!

This Friday October 2 from 2-3pm, Sirpa Tuomainen (mustikka here on FIT) and Dave Malinowski (daveski) will host an informal gathering for language people (that means you) in the Claire Kramsch Lounge, 34 Dwinelle. Please come and tell a friend or two…good conversations might also turn into good blog posts here on FIT! If you feel inspired, snacks are appreciated.

The topic:

Share a favorite or special or interesting word in a non-English language and plan on teaching that word to the rest of us, and ideally telling a story that goes along with that word.

  • Why is it significant to you?
  • What nuances or weight does it carry with it?
  • Is it translatable in English? Why or why not?
  • Is it a word you’ve taught before or would like to teach?
  • How would you/can you/did you teach it?
