Eagerly Dissatisfied

Written By: justinep on February 1, 2010 2 Comments

How a new word does transform my speech! … coloring my words with a  new hue, from a palate I did not before own!  My writing no longer seems banal or repetitive and I am not merely mimicking myself or others!

“Alacrity” is this new word I have found.  Of course, I had heard it and seen it in print, but without ever remembering its simple definition, I never thought to use it until now!  So with alacrity, I embrace this word, not wanting to wait until I can use it next.  Suddenly things seem so new and my perceptions of emotions and desires now change.  Where before I merely thought “eager”, I can now insert my new friend.  But it is not mere substitution but a most playful sort of dressing, the syllables tap-dancing themselves off my tongue.

It’s an incredible feeling, learning this new word.   But even as I rejoice in my alacritous aims, I think of all the words and definitions I still do not know and those I likely never will.  Will I never have a certain thought, will I never make a certain observation, and most terribly, will I never feel a certain emotion simply because I have no word to name it? … And all this fear comes before I even begin to imagine the words another language possesses but which my own does not.

An alacritous post if there ever was one! I’ve also wondered at the vast swathed of unknowables, unfeelables, imperceptibles that lie beyond our reach since we don’t have the words or concepts for them. Maybe, though, it’s in the “arc” toward new meanings, and not having finally arrived at mastery, that we really experience the pleasure of words and the territories the point to…?

Great to see you here on FIT too!

One more for you! Here’s a poem I came across that echoes with your post: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-forgotten-dialect-of-the-heart/
