Thanks to Alexis on FB for the latest collection of unnecessary quotation marks on signs, this time on Huffington Post.

My personal favorite from the group, a billboard ad from a pair of lawyers, it seems:

Waitz & Downer: Fighting for your “legal rights” since 1959

If you haven’t already, see the collection posted […]

“A” “Fabulous” “blog”

Absolutely hilarious, and fast gaining popularity: “the “blog” of “unnecessary” quotation marks.” My favorite sign:

Learning 2 languages at once: English in 한글!

여러분, 안녕하세요? (Hi, everyone!)

I’m writing this post for anyone on this blog, Found in Translation, but want to give a special shout-out to the summer language classes at Cal. And since I’m in Korea right now, and since I started studying Korean many years ago in a K1 summer language class at Berkeley (now I’m […]

Indian Sign Stores

This afternoon, I had occasion to visit some “sign stores” in a neighboring village in a New Delhi suburb. We needed stamp pads (it’s a long, dull, inconsequential, and utterly irrelevant story why), and so, this hot afternoon-it was around 104°F, with 25% humidity-we trekked over to the village. The “LADIES TOILET” (or, the “Ladies/महिला”/”Women” […]

Road Signs: International Edition

This has been a rather eventful month for road signs across the globe, so here’s a short round up of some of the more interesting news that caught my attention in January..

The Birmingham City Council, UK, has decided to drop possessive apostrophes from road signs, to the dismay of many, particularly the Apostrophe […]

Seeing the super-giga-sized and somewhat creepy photo of the thousands of people assembled in front of the Capitol building last week for Obama’s inauguration, with its thousands of unsuspecting faces all looking intently toward the speaker in question, made me wonder: how many other things were going on on the same day, in […]

I was rereading Saussure for a class today, when I was struck by his comment that in French, dogs go “ouaoua,” while in English they bark out “bow-wow”!

I looked online for resources on animal sounds in different languages, and here are some interesting links I found:

Quack-project.com, which has actual sound files.

Hidden Signs

From the New Delhi, India, campaign and “to-let” flyers make an appearance on street signs:

Who cares where you are?

And behold the irrelevance of traffic signs:

Branded Shoes

So we were driving through a small alley in a suburb of Delhi, India, today, and as we went past two shoe stores, I was struck by the logos of the companies on the shoe boxes (click on the pictures to enlarge):

Behold the “Googly” (sorry for the blurry image):

And the “Kellog’s“, and shoes with […]

Danger Signs

As we drove to the gym today in a satellite town of New Delhi, India, I was struck by a skull and crossbones sign painted on the back of an auto-rickshaw. It had the word “STOP” written beneath it (see below). Now, I associate the skull and crossbones sign with poison and pirates…I have never […]

The faces of Berkeley

Today, as I step back into the non-place of the SFO departure lounge on the way to the workshop on linguistic landscape in Siena, I’m also taking a detour from the path to Livermore. By now I suppose I’ve passed the Berkeley library, the Southside lineup of more→

Keep Off Media(n): What’s (in) a sign?

Already more days have passed than I wanted since my first post on signs — I haven’t been carrying my camera around with me as I’ve been running around doing holiday shopping, bike has been in the shop, and with all the interesting things going on related to the end of the year, […]

Recession Logos

I was looking at the Offbeat News section on Digg.com, when I found a link to this awesome Flickr photograph (see below). It presents famous logos of big companies, cleverly modified to reflect the tough economic times. [Click on the picture in order to see a bigger version.] “wmliu,” (who I […]

Signs all the way home

Over the next few weeks, I’d like to use this space to post pictures of signs and talk about them — no, not the worn-out diagrams of tree-sounds and tree-concepts, the signifiers and signifieds of Saussure’s universe (though those are plenty interesting too). I’m talking about the kind of signs that you and I […]

Signs from Around the World!

A really amazing Flickrite, Tony Bowden, has compiled a massive gallery of signs from around the world. Check it out here. [Hat tip: Chris Bodenner.] Looking at the signs he has collected, I was reminded of a very interesting sign I took a picture of, at a park in New Delhi, India, […]
